1823-11 - Geared Wind Turbine - 10 Pack

Do you want more energy to power lights or even run a hobby motor? Then the Geared Wind Turbine is for you! The gear box assembly increases the alternator rpm and therefore increases the power generated (see Gear Box Build Guide). Reengineering the gear ratios can change the power output. Also, the amount of electricity generated can vary by redesigning blades and alternator coil wrap patterns. Build your wind turbine with alternator components (see Alternator Build Guide), hub assembly, gears, hole plates, dowels, hardware and additional found materials. A stand is necessary. Purchase either the Bench or Wind Turbine Stand. Blade material choice is up to you to procure. Check the Blade and Hub Construction Guide to get started. Additional free Build Guides are available below.

Create Innovative, High-Performance and High Output with a Geared Wind Turbines - Single Kit

The TeacherGeek Wind Turbine is comprised of four main components: The alternator, hub, blades and the gear box.

The alternator, consisting of the stator and rotor, develops electricity. It can be configured to create multiple phase outputs.

The stator is the part of the alternator that does not rotate. The stator has twelve "teeth" which wire can be wrapped around to create endless coil configurations. An electrical current (electricity) induced in the coils as they pass through the magnetic fields of the rotor. The back of the stator has screw post terminals for connecting stator coils to test leads.

The rotor is the part of the alternator that spins an array of permanent magnets. The rotor has twelve positions magnets can be snap-locked into. Magnets are securely held, yet easily removed and reconfigured.

The hub securely clamps blade shafts while allows quick and easy adjustment. To gain more power we add the Teacher Geek gear box.

Blade shafts are included with our wind turbine kits. To make blade surfaces, just add corrugated cardboard, plastic packaging or other material you have on hand!

How Much Power Can I Create?

The TeacherGeek 12 magnet alternator can easily develop 2-5 volts on its own as a direct drive.  When you add a gear box the performance drastically improves. The gearing will increase the speed of the rotating stator; blades may look like they are spinning at a moderate speed but the stator is spinning much faster.  You will be able to measure the power increase with a meter or with lights. Our geared wind turbine can produce up to 10 volts. That is enough power to light a string of LEDs or a group of holiday lights.

As Always, this activity includes free downloadable instruction. Patent pending.

Can we customize our blade design?

Customize your blade design? Yes you can!

With Teacher Geek the sky is the limit. We encourage the use of found materials and the creative deigns of the students. Build your blades out of anything from cardboard to plastic and see how the size, configuration and shape will effect power output.  From experimentation and trial and error students learn how to build better innovative designs.

*Found Materials: Students bring in materials from home; they raid the recycle bin, wood pile or use parts from broken toys and items found around the house.

More About the  Teacher Geek Geared Turbine

Step up the output with a Teacher Geek Gear Box.

Lean how gearing can produce so much more power! Students use the same stator as found in our direct drive program but now you add the advantage of a gear box. Students build their gear box and are allowed to customize the gears the size, position and order too. Students learn what happens as you change gears size and order, but best of all they can see the results for themselves.

  • A gear box converts torque from the turbine hub into increased rotational speed at the alternator.
  • The gearbox is designed to get the most power out of our 12 magnet turbine kits
  • A gearbox can increase turbine output up to 10 volts depending on blade design and gearing.
  • The TeacherGeek Geared wind kit contains two hole plates, 8 gears, plenty other parts needed to build an outstanding transmission.
  • Includes downloadable instructions and activity guide
